Work begins on the integral improvement of the water networks of the Bazán slum

This first phase of the action has an implementation period of 11 months and a total budget of 927,961.04 euros

Hidralia, a concessionaire of drinking water and sewerage service in San Fernando, has already started work for the integral improvement of the supply and sewerage networks of the Bazán neighborhood. One of the most demanded and expected actions by residents and entities in the face of deficiencies and problems in the area, which is why Hidralia, together with the San Fernando City Council, has held a working meeting with the association of neighbors and the local groups.

The machines already work in Bazán slum

This meeting, in addition to announcing the start of the work, has served to explain the planning and deadlines, as well as to solve all the doubts or concerns that the action may generate. In this way, the manager of Hidralia, José Luis Trapero, has pointed out that over the next few days the fencing and consolidation of the relevant signalling and safety elements will be carried out and then begin with the bulk of this first part of the action, since it has been divided into two phases , so that it can be undertaken without paralyzing the activity on site.

Work will focus at first on the construction of infrastructures to create a network of faecal water on the one hand and stormwater on the other. The objective is to solve the historical problems of flooding suffered by the slum every time it rains with some intensity, as well as to provide a network of black water to the area, since the one that currently exists is a structure more than 150 years old through which all the residual guas of the part of La Casería are evacuated , of the naval population of San Carlos and Bazán itself, generating at this point a problem of hydraulic insufficiency, when the waters are channeled by gravity, which further complicates the problem.

These works will allow Bazán to have a separative network, reducing the risk of network collapse and preventing re-repeated episodes of flooding that, depending on the intensity, caused the overflow of even sewage.

Something that will be achieved thanks on the one hand the construction of a Wastewater Pumping Station (EBAR) that allows to channel all the faecal waters of the area to the sale station of Vargas and, from there, to the Wastewater Treatment Station. To which we must add the installation of a wastewater drive manifold to the highway.

On the other hand, when a Stormwater Pumping Station  is erected that collects all rainwater that reaches the area and installs an drive manifold to be connected to the existing rain reliever for the drainage of water from precipitation.

These infrastructures will solve the problems identified from the current gravity pipeline, which has shown insufficient for the needs of a slum that is at the level of the surrounding marshes and whose problems are further complicated if there is high tide. Something that will no longer affect the relief of both faecal and stormwater.

In particular, this first phase of proceedings in Barriada Bazán has an implementation period of 11 months and a total budget of EUR 927,961.04.

Once the above is implemented it will be time to carry out the diversion of the sewer collector from the Naval San Carlos population, the renovation of the sewer networks of the entire slum, completing the existing storm network, both in the streets and inside the courtyards of the neighborhood, since such networks date back to the 50s, when the slum was built, and the diameter of the existing pipes is too small to accommodate the flow of water it receives. This will prevent the network from saturating so frequently and the overflows that usually occur mainly with rains.

These actions will also include the renovation of existing infrastructure in the slum, such as drinking water supply networks.

A complete reform of the sanitation, storm and drinking water networks of the Bazán slum in which Hidralia will contribute 4.1 million euros of the total needed. To this we must add a departure of one million euros of endowment for improvements in the sewerage and supply of the city. In total, more than five million euros destined by Hidralia for improvements to the city's hydraulic infrastructures and to be implemented over the next few years, according to the extension of the contract.

A series of actions that aim to achieve the green reconstruction of the town, as in the case of the Bazán neighborhood by transforming the model of the area to be able to withstand a more sustainable and circular growth based on the water balance adapting the infrastructures that it has to adapt and have greater resilience in dealing with the consequences of climate change, such as the increasingly frequent torrential water rushes in rainy season.
