Fundación AQUAE, the Hidralia foundation, and the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) present today the 7th edition of the PhotoAquae award, a photographic contest created by the Foundation in 2015 in order to disseminate the value and importance of water and its care to preserve life on the planet.

Participation is open to anyone of legal age from any country in the world. Applicants, who may submit up to a maximum of three original photographs, which have not been awarded in other photographic competitions, and whose theme is water, must fill out the online form that appears on the Foundation's website and attach the images with the that they concur.

The deadline to participate in this contest has started on February 3, and ends on March 10 at midnight. A jury made up of photographers and members of the SIWI and Fundación AQUAE teams will select the finalists. The winner, who will receive a prize of € 1,000, will be announced on March 22, coinciding with the celebration of World Water Day. Participating photographs will become part of the Foundation's graphic archive and can be viewed on its website.

'Underwater caves', a picture that captures the image of a diver in an underwater cavity in Menorca in bluish tones, gave the victory to the Menorcan, Víctor de Valles Ibáñez, in the last edition of PhotoAquae. In 2019 the winner was Andrés Carrasco, from Algeciras (Cádiz), with his black and white photograph ‘Enjoying the water’, which shows a Cape Verdean boy watering himself with water from a jerrycan.

PhotoAquae has received in its six previous editions more than 8,200 photographs from all over the world. Images that testify to the power of water in nature, a resource that has been shown to be key to guaranteeing the essential hygienic conditions to prevent the transmission of COVID-19 and the survival of humanity. Currently, one in three people in the world (2,200 million in total) lives without access to drinking water, a situation that climate change is aggravating and about which initiatives such as PhotoAquae try to raise awareness in society.

“We are more than satisfied to have the support of the Stockholm International Water Institute in this seventh edition of PhotoAquae, a benchmark in the world of research on prudent water governance, transboundary water management, and its impact on the climate change", says Mikel de Pablo, from Fundación AQUAE.

It should be remembered that the Fundación AQUAE was born in 2013 with the aim of being a laboratory of ideas and reflection and research on water issues. Throughout its seven years of life, that vision has grown, evolved and expanded. Without leaving aside the aspect of knowledge and dissemination, which continue to be central axes of its activity, the Foundation has opened new lines of work in the field of innovation, cooperation, entrepreneurship and integration.
