The City Council of San Fernando e Hidralia, the concessionaire of drinking water and sewerage service in San Fernando, will review these days the state of cleaning of the sewer system of the most critical areas of the town for the next rainy period.

It should be remembered that once the State of Alarm was completed, this municipal service initiated the campaign to strengthen the cleaning and preventive maintenance of the more than 7,500 sewer of the municipality and intensified the work so that they are at full capacity to transport the fallen waters and avoid possible damage.

The goal is for the locality to be prepared for the water stress caused by the rains, sometimes turned into temporary forts as has happened in recent years as a result of climate change. With these maintenance and reinforcement actions, Hidralia adds to achieve the resilience of the city and be more prepared for the possible adverse consequences of the storms.

That is why, in the context of this action, special attention is paid to the most critical areas of the city. For this reason, and although the cleaning of the sewers has already been carried out in these parts of the city, a review of the state will be carried out in places such as Bazán, Buen Pastor, San Onofre and San Marcos, Pery Junquera Avenue, Gómez Pablo roundabout area, the Casería and Zona Centro, in case you need to act on them again.

Thanks to this campaign, which is carried out periodically in accordance with the Plan of Maintenance and Cleaning of the Sewerage System of the city of San Fernando for this year, during the months of July, August and, especially September, intensive cleaning of  sewerage networks are carried out. These actions complement those carried out throughout the year, in which all the sewer available to the city are cleaned and the preventive and corrective maintenance of the pumping stations are carried out.

Precisely in San Fernando, the sensorization of the network, the monitoring of the pumping stations managed from the central remote control, allows to increase the reaction capacity of the municipality and achieve a more efficient management in the face of the arrival of the rains.

The maintenance and cleaning plan

The City Council and Hidralia include in their maintenance plan the cleaning of registration wells and sewer networks to try to ensure the optimal functioning of the city's sanitation system in the face of the next autumn rains. In addition, the repair of damaged record and sewer wells is also performed.

They also operate at the 16 wastewater pumping stations in San Fernando, whose mission is to push them to the sewage treatment plant. Thus from the beginning of the year the periodic cleaning of the main pumping stations of the city is carried out, such as Venta de Vargas, Pery Junquera, Zaporito, Milagrosa and San Carlos, so that they are fully operational for autumn.

Within this planning, the cleaning and maintenance of the canals of the storms existing in the city, mainly those located in the area of Parque del Oeste, Fire Park and Carretera de la Carraca, becomes particularly important. To this end, during the month of July it has been cleared and cleaned to facilitate at all times the evacuation of stormwater reaching them, thus minimizing the risk of flooding in case of heavy rains.

Preventive cleaning of sewer efficient maintenance of the sanitation and storm network and planning of the city's structural needs in the event of heavy rains are some of the key elements to deal with these episodes.
Finally, it is recalled that improper use of sewerage systems in homes can cause breakdowns and hazardous situations in the city's general sewerage system. Among these inappropriate uses are the throw through the toilet of wet bath wipes, which end up forming jams in sewer networks or in pumping stations, seriously jeopardizing the operation of the general water evacuation system.

In addition, an increase has been detected in the networks of elements such as gloves or masks, which are used for prevention against covid-19, which ends up in sewers by not being disposed of in the correct way. In this way from the Town Hall and Hidralia the indications of different bodies such as the Ministry of Health are urged, remembering that such waste should not be flushed either down the toilet or on the streets, since they will eventually end up in the sewer system or in the wild.
