Works to prepare the San Fernando sewer system for autumn rains
In recent months, Hidralia has intensified the cleaning of scuppers in the town so that they are at the maximum of their hydraulic capacity
The cleaning works of the scuppers of San Fernando have intensified in recent months in anticipation of the proximity of the autumn rainy season. Thanks to this campaign, which is carried out periodically in the framework of maintenance and cleaning of the sewerage network of the town, the sewers are found to be at the maximum of their hydraulic capacity to transport the fallen water and avoid possible damage. once the rainfall arrives.
In this way, in accordance with the Maintenance and Cleaning Plan of the Sewer System of the city of San Fernando for this year, during the months of July, August and especially September, the cleaning work of the scuppers and sewer networks of the city intensifies.
These actions complement those carried out throughout the year, in which the more than 7,500 scuppers available to the city are cleaned and the preventive and corrective maintenance of the pumping stations is carried out.
Within the framework of this campaign, special attention is being paid to cleaning the most critical areas of the city. These include the San Onofre and San Marcos networks, La Carraca road, the Gran Poder bridge and Venta de Vargas, as well as Bazán, Pery Junquera or the Callejón de la Marina, among others.
A continuous cleaning work
Since the beginning of 2019, 2,350 log wells and 70 kilometers of sewerage network have been cleaned. Regarding the cleaning of scuppers, from the beginning of the year to date, more than 7,600 cleanings have been carried out and, likewise, 85 log wells and 150 scuppers have been repaired.
Likewise, in the Maintenance and Cleaning Plan, the 16 wastewater pumping stations in San Fernando are also included, whose mission is to promote them to the treatment plant. So far this year the main pumping stations in the city have been cleaned, such as Venta de Vargas, Pery Junquera, Zaporito, Milagrosa and San Carlos, so that they are fully operational for the autumn.
Within this planning, the cleaning and maintenance of the channels of the existing spillways in the city, especially those located in the area of Parque del Oeste, Parque de Bomberos y Carretera de la Carraca, becomes especially important. This is done systematically to clear and clean it at all times to facilitate the evacuation of rainwater that reaches them, thus minimizing the risk of flooding in case of heavy rains.
Wipes jams
Within the framework of this campaign, it should also be remembered that improper use of residential sewer systems can lead to breakdowns and dangerous situations in the city's general sewer system. Among these inappropriate uses are the elimination through the toilet of the wet bath towels, which end up forming jams in the sewer networks or in the pumping stations, seriously endangering the operation of the general water evacuation system.
For this reason, the City Council and Hidralia insist on the need for all citizens to become environmentally aware and keep in mind that individual actions also contribute to improving sustainability and avoiding environmental problems in the locality. In this way, in addition to all the municipal actions carried out, this change of collective mentality is encouraged to fight against pollution and to act against climate change.
